BE FLAT

with IMPOSING SPACES, EXPOSING PEOPLE

The company

Be Flat is a circus company based in Ghent Belgium, founded by Ward Mortier and Thomas Decaesstecker. The company is known for its unique mix of acrobatic circus and urban sports.

Be Flat is the chameleon among the circus artists.  By responding to the environment, each of their performances become a unique event.

As residents of the urban environment, we are fascinated by the public space. The city is a living organism in constant flux. How do we use this common space? Who are we in today's street scene?

Be Flat strives for equality. We play for everyone. Our goal is to use our creativity to bring spectators with different backgrounds together, during our ‘interventions’, and also thereafter.

The workshop

Be Flat offers a focused workshop on "Blending into Public Space through Adaptation," aimed at exploring how individuals can creatively engage with and shape urban environments.

The workshop begins with a deep dive into each participant's unique background and interests, helping them define their personal connection to public spaces. This process establishes a clear understanding of how the urban environment can influence and be influenced by those who inhabit them.

The core of the workshop centers on applying artistic and technical skills in diverse locations. Participants will be guided in exploring how their work can interact with and transform public spaces, challenging the conventional boundaries.

In addition, the workshop includes targeted exercises and reflections on how to activate and engage the audience within public spaces. Participants will explore strategies to draw people into their work, encouraging active interaction and providing new ways of experiencing their surroundings. The goal is to offer fresh perspectives that invite people to see urban spaces differently.

Through structured individual, pair, and group exercises, the workshop facilitates the development of a shared language among participants, fostering collaboration and a collective approach to creative expression in public spaces. By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed practical insights and strategies for integrating their work into the urban landscapes.
